Rhodococcus ruber (Kruse 1896) Goodfellow and Alderson 1977

<- 1975, I.B. Ivshina, OEGM 27-P (Rhodococcus rhodochrous). Isolated from: underground water, oilfield outline zone, Perm region, Russia. Taxonomy/description: shows positive result with Rhodococcus ruber primers in species-specific PCR (245); (5, 35, 55, 72, 97). Properties: uses propane, n-butane, liquid n-alkanes (C5-C16) and aliphatic alcohols (ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol) as a sole carbon source (5); resistant to lincomycin, oxacillin and nalidixic acid when growing on propane and n-hexadecane (230, 246); accumulates polyphosphate granules when growing on propane (52, 73); synthesizes functional antigens when growing on propane (51); forms cholesterol oxidase; accumulates caesium ions (251); resistant to Pb2+ (10.0 mM). (Medium 2, 5, 8 or 15, 28oC).
